The Abbate family's origins are disputed, but they have been in Palermo since ancient times. Notable members include Palmerio Abbate (Sicilian Vespers), Troiano Abbate (Senator, 1499-1500), Gabriele Abbate (married into the barony of Ucria, 1453), Rinaldo (captain executioner, 1536-37), Andrea (senator, 1559-60), Vincenzo (Baron of Ucria, 1576), and Giacomo (captain of justice, 1584-85). Matteo Abbate married Fara Mortillaro and had Ignazio-Vincenzo, Giuseppe (governor of the Monte dei Pegni and senator), and Giovanni (priest). Ignazio-Vincenzo Abbate and Mortillaro became the first Marquess of Lungarini (1723) and Baron of Ficarra (1738). His son, Mariano, inherited these titles. Mariano and Agata Branciforte had Ignazio, Emmanuele Salvatore, and Anna. Ignazio Abbate and Branciforte inherited the titles in 1808. He married Serafina la Grua and had Mariano, Antonino, Caterina, Giuseppa, and Agata. His second marriage to Marianna Maiorana produced Giovanna, who married General Salvatore Musto and is the mother of Raffaele-Baldassare Musto and Abbate, who currently holds rights to the Abbate family titles.
