The D'Amico family is believed to descend from Count Amico d'Amico, who initially allied with the Normans to expel the Saracens but later conspired against Duke Robert Guiscard due to being overlooked for their role in the conquest of the island. Separately, historical accounts from Villabianca indicate a Guglielmo d'Amico who was Baron of Ficarra but was dispossessed for treason by King Conrad I. Mugnos states that this was a noble Bolognese family established in Messina during the time of Frederick II, from whom they received positions and favours.
Throughout history, members of this family held significant positions. Mugnos concludes that almost all members of this family were highly distinguished individuals, known for their important positions, illustrious actions, and, at times, valour. Branches of this family also flourished in Milazzo and Catania.
The D'Amico family is also found among the noble families of Vizzini, though this branch seems distinct from the aforementioned, noted as a non-noble branch of an existing family in Augusta.
