The Castelli family is said to descend from the ancient counts of Terni, with various branches spreading across Italy, including Lombardy, Genoa, Treviso, Bologna, Rome, Modena, Reggio, Milan, Sicily, and Naples. According to the chronicler Ciriaco Spangerberg, the family originated from Franconia, where the Castelli were counts of the Holy Roman Empire. Genealogists trace their origin to Adalberto, a descendant of ancient Franconian counts.
A key figure in Italy was Remigio, Prince of Terni, son of Etanno, the last Duke of Franconia, confirmed by a diploma from King Alfonso of Aragon in 1454. The family made three significant passages to Sicily: the first with Corrado Castello under Count Roger, who became the progenitor of the Biscari branch in Catania (now extinct and integrated into the Paterno family); the second with Pisane families, including the Castelli, distinguished by doctors Giandomenico and Giambattista Castelli, judges in Messina; and the third with Gregorio Castelli, who came from Genoa in 1608 and acquired various titles and lands including the county of Gagliano, the marquisates of Capizzi and Motta, and the barony of Dorilli.
